The Duck Dog Challenge utilizes remotely launched simulated dummy birds that have an attached target that you actually shoot. When hit, the exploding target has the visual effect of a hard hit bird. Unlike sporting clays, this target is designed for your gun dog to retrieve! Our events are open to all breeds of dogs, registered or not.

In mid-April, my husband, Lt. Brandon Hartleben, was deployed to Iraq. Meanwhile, I was finishing up my junior year at Grand Valley State University in Michigan. Just a few months earlier, Brandon and I had gotten married and a few days later went to an animal shelter in his hometown of Moline, Illinois. Brandon and I immediately fell in love with the only puppy there — a 2 month old Brittany Spaniel. A couple weeks later, Brandon had to report to Fort Lewis, while I had to finish up school. I took the puppy, who we named Drake (after the duck), back to Michigan. By the time Drake was 6 months old, he was like many spoiled dogs; not only was he top dog, he ruled everything. Drake and I moved to Puyallup, Washington in May. It was a very difficult move due to the fact that I had no friends or family here, and didn’t even know the area. The only thing I had around me was my dog. The only problem was that he was a problem. He would take off anytime I would open the door, scratch the doors if I went outside and left him alone, would jump on neighbors and knock down little kids, and would virtually pull my arm out if we went for a walk — pulling so hard he could barely breathe… many people knew him as “the terrorist” of dogs.
In August of 2007, I finally had enough of Drake’s shenanigans. Between my husband being overseas and my dog being out-of-control, I frequently began experiencing a new emotion: anxiety. I knew that Brittany Spaniels were pointers, mostly used for hunting pheasants. Since one of my husband’s favorite past times was bird hunting, I thought that I would try to find a dog trainer that could not only train my dog to be obedient, but also to introduce him to hunting. After searching the internet for a couple days, I found the website Sitmeanssit.com, a nationwide dog training service based out of Las Vegas. Kate Johansson was the dog trainer in the Tacoma area, who came to my house and gave me an elaborate demonstration with her dogs — which are mostly labs. I was so impressed with her dogs that I signed up immediately. Within two to three days my neighbors were shocked by the difference in Drake’s obedience. He had the same happy temperament, but listened to me! Over the next few months Kate would meet me at my house or different locations around Tacoma, as well as having class with other clients every Thursday evening. Three months later, Drake was trained in obedience, hunting, and agility. What I wasn’t expecting was how training Drake became a type of therapy for me, and how he now lends emotional support to me. Come February, when my husband arrives for his two weeks of leave from Iraq, I get to unveil to him my surprise: a house and hunting companion. But without Kate at Sit Means Sit, none of this would have been possible. And to her, I owe a world of thanks.
