what is the best kind of dog to get if you are going to use it for pheasant, and grouse hunting (mostly)?

Posted in Pheasant Hunting  by admin

(has to be a dog that can be an indoor dog also) and how much would it cost total to buy food for 1 year, get it trained to be a hunting dog, and how much attention would it need? (live in Minnesota)

Boy have you opened a can of worms. Every dog enthusiast has a favorite breed, and will argue in it’s favor until the cows come home.

Basically, there are two types of hunting dogs: pointing and flushing. So your first decision is which of those you prefer. With flushing dogs you have to work closer to the dog, so as to be in position for the shot. With pointers the dogs can range further out, because they’ll hold until you get there.

Next, it’s rare to find a breed that can work both the pheasant fields and the grouse woods. For grouse you need a close-working dog, even if it’s a pointing breed. For the fields, a further-ranging dog is preferred.

Even so, for combination dogs I would recommend any of the following:

Pointing dogs: Elhew pointers—because they are genetically predisposed to adjust to the terrain they’re hunting. Otherwise either a Lewellen or English Setter or a Brittany Spaniel.

Flushing dogs: Springer spaniel.

Keep in mind that individual dogs, within any breed, can be trained to work both kinds of cover. But it’s always better to start with a breed more likely to do that.

Can you pheasant hunt alone and have any luck?

Posted in Pheasant Hunting  by admin

I usually go pheasant hunting with my friends but they are either all out of town or busy doing something else. I’m itching to go and am wondering if it would be worth it to try it on my own. If so, what are some techniques I should use? Should I hunt near wetlands, etc? Thanks for the help.

Do you hunt near wetlands with your friends? Just go where y'all normally do & take your chances… It is a lot easier with friends & dogs to help quarter the fields, but not necessary…. If you got the bug, I say go for it! ….& remember…. "the worst day hunting, is better than the best day working!"
Good Luck!

Which ammo for pheasant hunting?

Posted in Pheasant Hunting  by admin

I will be going to Kansas for a pheasant hunting trip. I have never been before. I know #5 shot is the right shot size but what length shell do I need, 2 3/4" or 3" ? I will be using a 12ga. Also, any specific brand of shell recommended?

I grew up in Iowa, where the men are men and and the pheasants are not afraid of them. With a 12, we always used nothing fancy 2 3/4 #4 – #6 shot with good effect. I have never seen the need to beat myself up with 3" 12ga. shells.
Good Luck.
