I am looking seriously into getting a Remington 700 for elk hunting. I was thinking either a .308 or 30-06. Which Remington 700 should I get, and why? Also, in which caliber and why?
I live in Southern Oregon, and would be hunting around here as well.
Go for the .30-06, you’ll be able to get slightly more potent loads than .308 (which is very close anyway, and they’ll both work fine). If the options are more than those two, I’d recommend a .338 Win. which can shed a bit more energy into the vitals.
Southern OR is beeyutiful. If west of the Cascades, you’ll really want to get something compact (stumpy barrel) and preferably in stainless steel, or be prepared to be constantly worrying about rust. On the east side neither issue is as much a problem.
The weather will be cold mornings but warm afternoons in the mountains of Idaho. I want to buy the best for my hunt. I will be hiking 4 miles a day for 7 days through the mountains.
I am an Alaskan hunter. The thin 100% silk duofold type is the best – very light weight, breatheable if you begin to sweat and will wick moisture from your body. It actually works better than the brown military thermals I've used for years. Best of all – it is not bulky like all the others. so you can easily wear your favorite comfortable clothes. Folded up, they fit in a small zip bag – if you take the time to vacuum seal them, why, they take practically no space at.
Cost is easily twice what other thermal's cost – but it is worth it. I wear these when doing aurora photography in mid winter at -55F and they are the bees knees.
You will be totally shocked at how nice these things are!
