Looking to buy a shotgun for Turkey Hunting?

Posted in Turkey Hunting  by admin

I'm looking to buy a Semi-auto shotgun for Turkey hunting . I recently started hunting again and I've falling in love with turkey hunting. I'm looking for something pretty cheap, but reliable. Any ideas on what type of calls I should get and any good web sites to buy from?

I would also have to say to go with a stoger 2000 in the camo. The gun has been voted as the best buy for semi auto shotguns. Made by benelli who is owned by Beretta. Both fine gun companies. As for the turkey call I would go on Cabellas website.

how to build a secret door?

Posted in Hunting Supplies  by admin

I would like to build a cabinet or bookcase that opens to a secret storage area to hide hunting supplies. Can anyone tell me where I can find plans? I have a 3' space between the walls.

I am an Interior Designer, and how I do it, is for the room that's the "hidden" side, put shelf's up as if its a built-in, painted to match all the woodwork and usually have more built-ins in the room to even out the weight, (and hide the handle behind a book.) The other side is left alone.

Where can I find examples of "Good" and "Bad" Leases for Apartments in Ontario?

Posted in Hunting Leases  by admin

I'm trying to put together a seminar for students in my University that will help them when they begin hunting for their first apartment, or if they encounter trouble with their landlord. I'm having a terrible time trying to find examples of a good lease, versus a bad lease, so I can show them what to look for. I'm very familiar with the Residential Tenancies act, and the Landlord and tenant board, but they don't seem to be much help unless you're already entered into a "bad" lease, or if something goes wrong.

I'd appreciate some suggestions on this! And experiances with good and bad leases would be helpful too! Thanks!

You probably shouldn't be teaching this issue then.

Read a lease contracting book and it will give you examples.

Public land deer hunting in Arkansas?

Posted in Hunting Land  by admin

Does anyone know any good public hunting land in Arkansas?

Arkansas Game and Fish Commission has lots of public lease land. Most require a $20.00 permit plus your license fee. $10.50 for resident and about $125.00 for non resident.

The Cherokee lease has always done well for me. My family has harvested quite a few nice bucks off of it over the years. It's kinda chopped up, but the areas near Drasco and Wilburn are real productive.

The Buffalo River National forest is also supposed to be a nice place to hunt. I've not had a chance to hunt there yet, but it is on my "to do" list.

Both of these areas offer great deer hunting as well as some black bear. If you choose to hunt the National Forest around Jasper you might also get to see some elk. But, the elk can only be taking by elk permit holders. These permits are lottery style drawings held in June.

There is also some nice public land in Lonoke and White county, but from what I've seen of it, it appears to have alot of swampy areas.

If you want a real chance of a nice buck on public land in Arkansas you will have to hike into it. There really seems to be a trend for people to only hunt in places where you can drive a truck within a few hundred yards of the stand. That's fine with me. That way they aren't deep in the woods where I'm hunting. I usually have better luck than those guys.

Good Luck and happy hunting.

What is the best dog for blood tracking and hunting?

Posted in Hunting  by admin

I am looking for a dog breed that is good for hunting (mainly deer) and good with families. I have a young child and do not want an aggressive breed. I am a novice dog trainer and would like to try and do most of the training myself. I want a breed that can be trained to blood track and retreive. Does anyone know of any good breeds?

For tracking, you probably will be best served by one of the many hound breeds. The other hunting dogs are not as well suited for tracking or trailing, as they tend to "air scent," meaning that they use their noses to smell their prey in the air. Hounds will keep their noses more to the ground and are incredibly adept at trailing their prey, especially a wounded animal leaving a blood trail.

I'm not sure what you want to retrieve, but if want a dog that retrieves ducks or other game birds in addition to tracking, than you should look at one of several breeds that track, point, and retrieve. These are known as versatile hunting dogs. There used to be only seven recognized breeds, but now there's no list of specific breeds (at least that I have seen in years). They included: German Wirehaired Pointer, Weimaraner, Visla, Wirehaired Pointing Griffin, and some others I can't remember. Also the Spinone Italiano and the Bracco Italiano qualify as Versatile Hunting Dogs.

I've owned and trained a bloodhound, and I loved him a lot! However, bloodhounds and many other hounds can be a bit stubborn and not the easiest to train. Make sure you do a lot of research on the best methods for training a dog to trail.

Good Luck!
